NUMSA Launches Its Association and Unveils Her Inaugural Magazine Edition

On March 28th, under the leadership of Emmanuel Oranwusi, President of the Nile University Medical Students' Association (NUMSA), the association successfully launched its first magazine, "The Medical Mindscapes." The event, themed "Medicine and The Medic" paid tribute to the field of medicine and the challenges faced by medical students.

The grand event featured a keynote address by Dr. Ugochukwu Charles Ugwuanyi, Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (FCT) and a distinguished neurosurgeon. His presentation encouraged students to reflect on their goals and the efforts required to achieve them. The event also included a panel discussion led by Dr. Nubwa Medugu, Head of the Department of Microbiology, Basic Clinical Sciences, and a consultant microbiologist. The discussion, focusing on tuberculosis, involved contributions from her former students and provided valuable insights into this pressing socio-medical issue.

The event was both enlightening and engaging, leaving NUMSA members inspired and enthusiastic about the future of their association. As they continue to work towards elevating NUMSA to greater heights, they anticipate more achievements to come.

World Tuberculosis Day: Featured a panel discussion led by Dr. Nubwa Medugu, with participation from Emmanuel Oranwusi, Irene Ewe, Ashraf Salihu, Safiya Sadiq Saleh, Abdul-Azeez Ibrahim O., and Maryam Jibrin Wunti.
World Water Day: Highlighted by a presentation from Saifullah.
World International Women’s Day: Marked by a presentation from Maymunah Haruna.


The launch event underscored the promise of a vibrant and supportive association for medical students at Nile University.

Dr. Ugwuanyi also highlights the qualities necessary to become a successful doctor, candidly discussing the various challenges medical students face and sharing valuable strategies to overcome these hurdles in their journey toward excellence.

Expertly addresses critical questions during the panel discussion on tuberculosis. She discusses the effectiveness of current TB treatment methods in Nigeria, the common challenges in TB diagnosis, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB diagnosis and treatment.


Dr. Medugu also delves into the challenges posed by drug-resistant TB on Nigeria’s control efforts and highlights innovative technologies and approaches being used to tackle TB in the country.

President's First Speech.


In his inaugural address, The NUMSA President, Emmanuel Oranwusi emphasized NUMSA’s commitment to enhancing student capacity and fostering collaboration. He reviewed key achievements, including securing 40 offices with NIMSA and 2 with FAMSA, organizing the upcoming NIMSA International Health Conference, and launching a new official website. Oranwusi highlighted successful social events and initiatives like canvas tutorial classes and a mentorship program designed to support mental well-being and camaraderie. He also noted the introductory lectures on affiliated medical student associations.


Expressing deep gratitude to supporters, Oranwusi encouraged ongoing dedication to overcoming challenges and expanding student engagement through outreach activities. He concluded with a powerful quote: “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it and I shall move the world.” He asserted that today marks the beginning of NUMSA’s journey towards greatness and a foundation of excellence for future generations.

President’s Second Speech Highlights NUMSA’s Legacy and Future Vision


In his second address, President Emmanuel Oranwusi recounted the evolution of the Nile University Medical Students' Association (NUMSA), tracing its origins to the 2018/2019 academic session under the leadership of President Ummi Dambatta. Dambatta, who was unanimously elected as NUMSA’s first president, oversaw the drafting and adoption of the association's constitution on January 25, 2019. Her tenure concluded on December 25, 2021, when Ibrahim Khalil Yahaya was elected as her successor. Yahaya led until December 2023, after which a new executive team, led by Emmanuel, was elected through a transparent process managed by Electoral Chairman Adonijah Airede.


Emmanuel, reflecting on his transition to Nile University in 2022, praised the institution’s infrastructure and academic excellence. He highlighted his initial misconceptions about the university being elitist, which were dispelled by its robust curriculum and supportive environment. He commended Nile University's amenities, including well-equipped hostels and comprehensive student services, which he believes significantly enhance the student experience.


Addressing past challenges faced by NUMSA, Emmanuel Oranwusi acknowledged the administration's role in overcoming these obstacles and affirmed his commitment to advancing the association’s goals. He lauded the collective effort that led to the creation of NUMSA’s new magazine, expressing gratitude to all contributors. Emmanuel emphasized that the magazine represents the collaborative spirit of the student body and serves as a symbol of future potential.


Looking ahead, Emmanuel Oranwusi outlined his administration’s goals to revitalize NUMSA and drive it towards progress and excellence. He expressed appreciation for the school administration's support and the strong sense of community among students. Concluding his speech, he articulated a vision of unity and optimism, aiming to elevate NUMSA and contribute to Nile University’s esteemed reputation.


Emmanuel’s address was marked by his inspirational quote: “Our collective aspiration is to resurrect our association from past challenges and propel it toward a future characterized by progress and excellence.” This quote encapsulates his commitment to fostering a legacy of growth and success for NUMSA and Nile University.
